!PER:This is a short story about my Grandmother, Grace Neola Burch.
She wasborn 13 Aug 1908 in Goodman Missouri, the daughter of John S. and Ada
Tennessee (Cooper) Burch. The day after Grace's 8th birthday, her mother died.
Grace's father did not like the responsibility of children. He
had already left two children from a previous marriage with his parents to
raise, so with the death of his second wife he once again abandon his children.
This time he chose to leave them with the Indian Tribe to which his natural
father John S. House, had been a member. When Grace was 14 years old, with the
consent of her father, she married my Grandfather Roy Lee Nance, who was 23
years old. He purchased her from the Chief of the Chickasaw Indian tribe off
the reservation for $50, a tidy sum of money in 1923 in the Osark region of
      Missouri.
He made a home for her in a small cabin outside Goodman Missouri. She still
played with dolls and so spent time with Roy's younger sisters who were more
her age. A short 9 months and 10 days after they were married Grace and Roy
were blessed with the birth of their first child, my mother Helen Grace Nance.
She was born 5 Aug 1924 in that cabin in Goodman. At the time of Helen's
birth Grace was home by herself. Roy had gone to town to try and find the
Doctor or Midwife to assist with the birth. With no luck at finding either he
settled for the local Vet which under the circumstances was better than no
help at all. You see he was worried about the birth because Grace was so
young, he had no need to worry. Much to the suprise of both Roy and the Vet,
by the time they returned to the house Helen had been born.
Grace had dressed her in some of her doll's clothes and had her wrapped in a
blanket in a wooden shoe box setting on the door of the oven. There were no
traces of the birth anywhere in the house. The really remarkable thing about
this birth is that my mother, Helen, weighed only 3 pounds at birth.
Grace's next child was also a daughter, Mildred Arlene, born 24 Apr 1927.
Her's was another unusual birth. Midge, as she is called, was one of a set of
twins, nothing unusual about twins you say. Not true.
You see Midges' twin sister had died about 6 months through the pregnancy.
Grandma carried both babies to term, delivering one still born and the other a
healthy daughter. It seems impossible even in these times.
The last child born to Grace and Roy was a son, Bobby Gene. He was the only
child born without any unusual circumstances. However, he developed Polio in
his childhood, but was not permanently bothered by it. At the time of Bobby's
birth Grandma and Grandpa lived in a cabin in an apple orchard in McDonald
      County Missouri.
