!PER:In 1856, Cynthia and her family left Arkansas to move to Elwood
Texas in
Fannin county. Hugh became a successful businessman and farmer. He
owned the
only distillery in Fannin county and a cotton gin, both of which
were located
in Elwood. He was enlisted in Company "C" 1st Regiment, Arizona
Brigade as a
first sergeant for the Confederate Army. On March 22, 1863 the
Confederate
government promoted him to second lieutenant and on April 1, 1863
his outfit
was reorganized into the 31st Regiment of the Texas Cavalry.

About 1844 Malcolm and his family moved to Missouri remaining there about three years, at which time they returned to Georgia. In 1849
approximately 500 people, mostly Whisenhunts and McRae's formed a wagon train and headed west. Malcolm settled in Pike County, Arkansas around the communities of Highland and Nathan, There they stayed until moving to Fannin County Texas in 1856. It is said that Malcolm walked into the General Store in Elwood with a gun over his shoulder and $20,000 in gold. He purchased 444 acres of land near Elwood where he lived the rest of his life. While living in Georgia, Arkansas and Texas, he served as justice of the peace and it attests to his fairness that no appeal was ever taken from his docket. The Fannin County community of McRae was named for this McRae family.

Malcolm married Mary Ann Whisenhunt on 21 Feb 1832 in Carroll County, Georgia, United States of America. Mary was born on 1 Sep 1809 in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States of America; died on 18 Oct 1878 in Elwood, Fannin County, Texas, United States of America; was buried in Elwood Cemetery, Elwood, Fannin County, Texas, United States of America. Notes:

Hugh came to America in 1774 with his parents, he was 8 years old. They first settled in South Carolina, and from there they went to Georgia.

McRae's were found early in Marlboro County S. Carolina and in Richmond County, N. Carolina, counties that border each other, Malcolm was found as an ancestor at the LDS Family History Center, submitted by Juanita Inglish Johnson, 1012 S. Horne St. Mesa Arizona and in the computer program, World Family Tree, submitter unknown. The book, Scots in the Carolinas, lists a Malcolm McRae, born 1756. Emigrated
to America in 1791. A farmer in Robeson County N.C. with a wife and eight children in 1812. If Hugh were born in 1761, this Malcolm could not
be his father.

Hugh married Nancy McDuffie in 1790 in South Carolina, United States of America. Nancy was born in 1764 in South Carolina, United States of America; died in Bef. 1830. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Some people say Nancy was born in South Carolina, but I believe she was born in Scotland and came to America around the same time as Hugh
Bain McRae, her future husband did.
